Vaughan Evans Fund for Young Ringers

Who can apply and how

The Vaughan Evans Fund exists to support young ringers to take part in HRGB associated events and activities.

This fund was set up in memory of Vaughan Evans who died in 2007. Vaughan had been a devoted supporter of HRGB serving in all three of the Officers’ posts as well as leading one of the country’s large teams of handbell ringers, St Wulfram’s, in Grantham. He always supported young ringers.

Who can apply?

To apply to the Vaughan Evans Fund you must be:

• a member of HRGB (this is free for those in full time education and under 24) at the time of application and at the time of the event

• in full/ part-time education and aged under 24 at the time of the activity (exceptions may be made for events falling in the summer month immediately after graduation/completion)

• have not been a recipient of a Vaughan Evans Fund or other HRGB grant for an event or activity within the last 24 months

• have fully met the expectations of any previous grants (see below)

What costs are eligible?
The maximum grant awarded will normally be £1000. Requests for smaller amounts are definitely encouraged!

We fund the full cost or part of the cost to attend the HRGB-associated events or activities. This includes (but is not limited to):

• regional rallies run in association with HRGB

• HRGB national rally or residential ringing week

• international handbell symposia

• team leaders’ and conductors’ workshops

• participation in regional bell orchestras

Applications will not normally be considered for events or activities that have already taken place, unless a clear reason is given as to why funding could not have been sought in advance. Take note of the deadlines and timescales below.

Eligible costs might include (but are not limited to):

• travel costs

• accommodation costs

• registration fees

• specialist equipment required for participation in the activity (e.g., risers, folders, mallets, or foam for international rallies)

• sheet music required for participation

• costs to support additional access needs due to disability (in such cases awards beyond the usual maximum may be considered)

• costs of chaperones (a non-ringing adult required for safeguarding purposes)

Ineligible costs include:

• equipment that is not a requirement for taking part in the activity

• belleplates, chimes, bells

We expect applicants to have regard for value for money for all costs. The committee may on occasion advise on ways in which equipment may be loaned rather than purchased.

How would the grant be paid?
If successfully awarded, registration fees will be paid directly by HRGB while other costs will normally be reimbursed on presentation of receipts. However, advance payments can be made when needed – please advise the committee when applying.

Expectations of Grant Holders

Grant holders will need to:

• Participate fully in the event or activity

• Share their experiences with other ringers or young musicians not at the event (e.g. with your handbell team or other regional ringers, or with other musicians or students at your place of education)

• Within 6 months of the event or activity, write a short article for Reverberations / Young Vibrations about their experience, citing the support of the Vaughan Evans Fund

• Submit receipts as proof of expenditure up to the amount originally requested and awarded.

How to Apply
Please use the application form provided. There are three parts to the application. You are encouraged to seek support from parents/guardians, team leaders and teachers in making your application.

1) Complete the application to provide us with your essential details, details of the event/activity, and notification of any past awards from this or other HRGB funds.

2) Provide a budget for your participation. This should:

• list all of the anticipated costs involved in your participation

• highlight those which you anticipate that the Vaughan Evans Fund will cover

• state how you intend to cover any remaining costs

• list any other funds that you have applied to, the amounts awarded/ applied for, and if you will be successful/ when you will hear about your success

3) Provide either a video/audio recording up to 5 minutes long, OR a 5-slide PowerPoint, OR a written supporting statement of no more than 500 words in which you:

• tell us about yourself and your ringing journey so far

•        why you want to attend this event or take part in this activity
•        what you hope to gain from taking part and how this will extend your experiences and develop your skills as a handbell ringer (beyond writing for Reverberations / Young Vibrations as required)
•        how this funding would support your participation
•        how you plan to share your experiences with other ringers, or young people

While we acknowledge that you might use AI to help in drafting an application, your answers must be your own and accurately reflect your work. AI-generated text is often too general or vague, which can weaken your application. We strongly encourage you to make your statement specific and personal to you, and to use your own ideas and words. Make sure everything you submit is specific, truthful and clearly describes your project.

Application Timelines
Applications should be submitted to HRGB (vaughanevansfund@gmail.com) by one of the following deadlines:

• 31 January

• 31 May

• 30 September

Application will be considered by at least three members of the HRGB education committee. Applicants will receive an acknowledgement of receipt within 1 week of submission and a response within 6 weeks of the deadline.

Awarding Guidelines for Grants from the Vaughan Evans Fund
Here are the guidelines against which we consider applications.

The Vaughan Evans Fund is limited so we will not always be able to fund all of the applications we receive, even if all the criteria are met. However, we very much encourage all eligible applications and success rates are currently high.

In order of importance, our criteria are:

1) Value to you

• what you will gain from taking part at this stage in your handbell ringing journey.

• how will this opportunity will enable you to develop as a ringer and a musician.

• appropriateness of activity in light of your experiences so far and your future aims.

2) Value for money

• participation has been fully and accurately costed.

• care has been taken to keep costs as low as can reasonably be expected.

• where appropriate (e.g. for high costs activities/events) efforts have been made to seek alternative/ additional sources of funding.

3) Benefit to others

• your plans to share your experience with other ringers or young people.

Where the number of high-quality applications exceeds the capacity of the awards that can be made, priority will be given to:

• Applicants who have not received funding from the Vaughan Evans Fund or other HRGB funds before

• Ringers who would be unable to attend/participate without the support of the Vaughan Evans Fund

• Ringers attending an HRGB-associated event for the first time

• Ringers undertaking activities or attending a type of event for the first time
