Regional Profile

The North East Region of HRGB was established on Saturday 12 November, 1977 following a rally attended by 12 teams and held at the Hawdon Institute in Selby.

Registered teams exist in South Yorkshire, close to the Peak District, and as far north as Northumberland - almost to the Scottish border. The most easterly teams are in the coastal resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington and over to the west established groups exist at Clifton and into the Dales country at Grassington.

The region has a tradition of off table ringing, established during the mid 1800's and enjoying great popularity through to the 1930's.

However, whilst traditional off table ringing is still practiced in the North East Region many bands, have chosen to adopt  In Hand, 4-in-Hand and Handchimes providing a contrast of ringing styles.  Great emphasis is placed upon developing new groups through the use of experienced practitioners facilitating workshops, mini rallies as well as traditional large scale rallies and all are regularly organised by both host teams and an enthusiastic committee.

The region is proud of its heritage and aims to preserve the history and traditions of ringing in the north of England whilst not forgetting the need to promote handbell ringing as a serious form of music making in the new millennium.
